Aside from staying updated on the latest news through our written articles, the Video Hub is a high-traffic page where users can watch long and short-form local & national news.


Over the course of 8 months, I led all aspects of the end-to-end design process into the transformation of a dated video page. I delegated stakeholder needs in order to gain buy-in, and participated in activities such as co-creation with my cross-functional team through a Crazy 8s design activity, and at one point, researched societal & psychological factors that influence video consumption.

A re-designed above-the-fold

A re-designed above-the-fold

My Engineering Team Lead and I set up heatmaps in the previous version of the Video Hub, using Hotjar. Upon analyzing its data intensity, we noticed that 75% of our desktop users only made it above-the-fold. This percentage was even less for mobile.

My Engineering Team Lead and I set up heatmaps in the previous version of the Video Hub, using Hotjar. Upon analyzing its data intensity, we noticed that 75% of our desktop users only made it above-the-fold. This percentage was even less for mobile.

Simply put, the new above-the-fold allows for more and relevant videos to be shown. Particularly on the right-hand side, I designed a section where users can discover and stay in the loop of trending videos, updated as news develops. This design was inspired by a few pre-existing components found throughout www.globalnews.ca, notably on the homepage and in article pages.

Video content that is displayed should also demonstrate Global News's professionalism and maintain high journalism standards. Aligning with our news publishing standards, the video hub should have fresh, relevant, and up-to-date content that is easily accessible for users.


All videos come with a timestamp, indicating how long ago the video was published, a brief description of the video, written by a journalist, and if applicable, its relevant text article.

In a user interview that was conducted, one respondent stated that they understood why ads have to be on websites, as they deal with them in their line of work. They mentioned that ads doesn’t have to live inside video.

While balancing the UX goal of ad placement and regulation in tandem with the product goal of exercising revenue generation,

I innovated the monetization experience by introducing sponsored third-party ads, on top of regular website and video ads.

Global News uses a tool called Outbrain, in which they supply the ads for us. My team worked with Outbrain to not only include the sponsored third-party ads, but to also seamlessly incorporate our branding in their components, to make them blend with our in-house content, contained in a carousel.
